I work with Doctors in the NHS. We get sent blood samples to try and diagnose the patient. We extract DNA and look at specific genes to see if we can find anything wrong. The answers we find then help the Doctors diagnose and treat their patients. We sometimes find really interesting things, which unfortunately usually isn’t good news for the patient, but it is interesting for us!

I work in a lab in the university. My research is mainly focused on wound healing and genetics, and I want to work out why some people are bad at healing wounds and get something called ulcers, and some people are extremely good at healing wounds and forming scars and then end up with something called fibrosis. I analyse pieces of tissue taken from humans and also their cells to work out why they respond in this way.

I work in a lab at a research institute. I look at how cells respond to getting their DNA damaged and how they try and repair it.

I work with medical doctors from cancer hospitals. I try to understand how different genes prevent or cause cancers, and how they affect which of our drugs will help cure the cancer and which will not work. Hopefully some of my findings will lead to changes in the way we treat patients that improve how often we cure their cancers.

I work in Immunology and try to work out why our own immune systems can sometimes go wrong and attack itself 🙂
