According to the Cancer Research UK website (which has some very good and up-to-date statistics) “In 2008, it was estimated that there are just over two million people living with or beyond cancer in the UK who had previously been diagnosed, and this is predicted to rise by more than 3% a year”. That includes patients being treated for cancer, and people who have been treated and their cancer appears to have been cured (but might re-appear).

A very scary 1:3 people will get some form of cancer in their lifetime. But most of these occur in late life, and not all of them will be life-threatening. Cancer is a very common and serious health problem for us though, and we really do need the huge amounts of funding that are provided for this. We are making improvements in treatment for most cancer types, but it is a slow process – and some tumours are, unfortunately, still very difficult to treat.
