Most of the time if I want to do an experiment, I just do it! That’s the great thing about being a scientist. You have the freedom to be creative and do what you like in the lab..,so long as you don’t blow it up!

If I were not a molecular biologist (a scientist that looks at genes and how they affect our cells) then I would love to do experiments in quantum physics. I always loved physics at school and had a hard choice between studying chemistry or physics at University. Maybe a particle physics experiment at the large hadron collidor in Switzerland. They are now looking at what atoms are made of, and why atoms are heavy – very cool stuff.

It’s a little bit off the topic of genes – but I think I’d like to know why we dream. Obviously we need sleep for our bodies to rest and recover, but I’d really know why we don’t just have a dreamless sleep everynight. There must be a reason why we dream otherwise it wouldn’t happen. I think sleep is not very well understood and seeing as how we spend about a third (I think!) of our lives sleeping it would be really interesting to learn more about it. I have no idea how you would do the experiment to discover why we dream but I would defintely be interested in the result. Also to see whether we could control our dreams and if we may be able to pick what we dream about! 🙂

As a totally sci-fi experiment i would shrink myself down to the atomic scale and just watch what happened, thatd be pretty cool, not quite there on the shrink ray yet!

I would love to be able to teleport – it would be amazing as I hate travelling and if you could just go from one place to another it would be really great – not very serious but I do think about it a lot!
