When I was little I always wanted to know how things worked, I think I used the word “why” a lot! I remember really enjoying science when I started high school. I think I liked how we had a different teacher for each subject and I remember how excited I was when I got to use a bunsen burner! I liked science more and more as I went through school and although I enjoyed and was good at most subjects, science – biology in particular was my favourite! I also liked chemistry and physics but I always found them a bit harder. I think high school was the time when I started to really pick out the subjects I wanted to stick to, and having a good teacher always helps. We have some really good sceince museums near to where I live and I always enjoyed visiting those more than the art galleries that our school used to bring us to. I haven’t always known what I wanted to do for a job, but I think it helps when you have a favourite subject! 🙂

I was also a why person too! I like to know answers and therefore ask lots of questions, I did this as a toddler and drove my parents mad! I think to enjoy science you have to want to find out the answer to a question or problem and then getting to the answer is really satisfying.

I remember doing my very first little science project. I think I was in year 7 and during the summer holidays I asked my chemistry teacher if I could take home some litmus paper. I did a project testing all the ponds and rivers and puddles I could find to investigate whether we were experiencing “Acid Rain”. I really enjoyed researching how acid rain worked and getting my hands dirty doing experiments. It’s never too early to start doing experiments, and when there is a prize involved … well! That’s just extra motivation 🙂

I started science lessons at 10 and enjoyed them straight away. I was heavily into science by the time I was 12. I remember at that age reading the equation E=MC2 in a superhero comic and then searching through encyclopaedias (yes, before internet!) trying to find out what it meant. A friend of mine’s dad finally explained it to me.
