Hi Nessy! Thanks for asking! I’ve been really lucky so far in my career.
During my PhD I got to live and work in Japan for 3 months on the South Island called Kyushu. It was an amazing experience to live and work in a completely different culture and I learned so much about Science – and the culture! I also get to work with a lab in South Africa and have worked with labs in Zurich – but in this case people from those labs came to me.
I have also been lucky enough to attend big scientific meetings – I have just this minute arrived home from Washington D.C, America (I haven’t slept for 26 hours so excuse the slow response and any bad spelling!). I’ve also been to Berlin and next year plan to go to Brasil! But there are also some equally exciting meetings in less exotic locations – like in Birmingham or Glasgow. Still great to travel though!
So yes! Personally, I do get to travel a lot 🙂
Thanks for asking!
Yes! Most scientists get to travel to see other peoples work and present their own at big conferences. I managed to get a trip to Austria which was mint as I love the moutains. I have also been to much less exotic locations including Sheffield, York and Birmingham. Needless to say I enjoy all of it as I really like meeting people and seeing their aspects of their work. There is usually a good social side too which is fun!
Yea because science is worldwide its a great way to travel.
Ive been to New york, amsterdam and milan in the last couple of years. Im going to canada next year and thinking of moving to work in america when i finish my PhD. Its definietly one of the best bits about being a scientist
Hello!! Yes, science is definitely the career for you if you like travelling!
I got to live in Toronto for a month at the start of my PhD, I was able to go and visit some amazing places including Niagara Falls – incredible! I have also been able to visit places like Chicago and Maine in the USA. I have also travelled all over England for conferences including Birmingham, Oxford, Newcastle. I think it’s quite nice to go somewhere else and meet other scientists, it’s exciting whether you go far or stay nearby! I know people who have gone to places like San Francisco or Hawaii, even South America as well.
I think it’s the same no matter what type of scientist you are! 🙂
I have been a fair few places. The US (San Francisco, Washington DC, Seattle, Sayre, Ann Arbor, Cincinnati, and Philadelphia), Canada (Toronto), Germany (Heidelberg), France (Paris), Italy (Lake Como)…oh yeah, and Birmingham (seems a popular place for science meetings judging by all our answers!)
