One of things that is different between men and women are hormones. These are chemical messengers that tell the body how to develop. Men have more testosterone than women (men don’t have oestrogen or progesterone like women do) so if a women was to take testosterone she would take on more male characteristics, one of which would be more hair so a moustache is possible!

Ha! I have seen some women with almost proper moustaches! So if you do see a lady with more body hair than you would consider ‘usual’ then as Louise says this would be because of their hormones. The opposite is also true, some men might not find it as easy to grow moustaches, and that may be because they have lower testosterone than other males. It’s particularly noticeable at the moment – during “movember” – do you know anyone taking part?

It would definitely be due to the hormones! However, there are some girls who have no hormone problems who just have darker hair or thicker hair and this is completely normal, we are all different after all! I have a guy friend who is my age who has never been able to grow a moustache, I think he only shaves once a week! 🙂

there are a number of medical conditions affecting hormones that can increase a woman’s body hair. Polycystic ovary disease could for example. But it is extremely rare that a woman produces a similar amount of facial hair compared to a typical man.
