It is not yet understood exactly why we dream, sleep is something that science is yet to understand in so many ways! Sometimes our dreams are random and sometimes they involve people or situation that we have been involved with that day. It’s difficult to determine a pattern. Sometimes I dream so many things I end up being more tired when I wake up then when I went to sleep – dreaming can be exhausting! Did you know that you are paralysed when you dream?? It’s thought that this happens so that you don’t act out your dreams! Check out some more cool facts at this link!

Yes, sleeping and dreaming really is a big mystery to scientists!

I read somewhere that dreams are just random firings of neurons in the brain, so your brain is being triggered randomly so that your mind cobbles together a story – the dream. These random firings can trigger emotions, sensations and memories – which explains why sometimes people in your dreams are familiar.

Some people have dreams that they think might have meanings – and so a more recent idea is that these “random” firings of nerves is actually more guided, and it’s triggering lose connections in the brain that are guided by the person sleeping.

I had a dream the other night that I was stuck in a parallel dimension and the only thing that could see me was my dog! It was so weird! But then I guess my brain is pretty random!

The other cool thing about dreams is whether you remember them or not. You have to wake up pretty much during the dream to remember it once you are awake. If you wake up very soon after dreaming you might remember some details, but you quickly forget. If you do not wake until a couple of minutes after the dream has ended you will not recall dreaming.

So if you, or someone you know, claims not to have dreams – the truth is that you did dream, but you just can’t remember them. I very rarely remember my dreams…probably because I am very good at staying asleep long after my dream has finished. Even longer if my children don’t come in and bounce on top of me!
